NSDEC has agreed to review proposals from commercial organisations applying to use ONS data through the Approved Researcher scheme. Where appropriate, NSDEC may approve some of these projects via a precedent process. The precedent process enables robust ethical decisions to be made on the basis of previous ethical decisions made by NSDEC.
To achieve that, the precedent process sets a clear set of criteria for requiring ethical review for proposals via precedent. These criteria will focus on detecting similarities and differences between previously approved projects and the current proposal. In order for a project to be considered by precedent it should meet all criteria.
In line with our commitment to transparency, information about all projects approved via the precedent route will be published shortly on the UK Statistics Authority website
