International Development Team

The demand for internationally comparative data has been unprecedented and shows no sign of slowing down. These data inform critical decision making about the society and the economy – impacting a wide range of issues, from healthcare to taxes.

No country or statistical system can address all the challenges alone. As we increasingly deal with global challenges, it is imperative that we work together in partnership, sharing expertise and resources and leading the way in shaping statistics for the global good.

The UK Statistics Authority, Government Statistical Service and Office for National Statistics does this by:

  • working with national statistical organisations around the world to share best practice, striving towards harmonisation and modernisation of international statistics
  • participating actively in international statistical organisations develop standards and methodologies, and to drive innovation in fringe statistical areas
  • supporting the UK and others to respond to global challenges including climate change, COVID-19 and creating more equal societies

We develop and maintain effective bilateral relationships with other national statistical organisations and build the capacity of statistical systems in developing countries as part of the UK’s Official Development Assistance (ODA). Find out more about this work on our FCDO Development Tracker page.

Our international work is carried out by our dedicated international relations and international development teams with support from the ONS Data Science CampusSustainable Development Goals (SDGs) team and other colleagues from across the UKSA, ONS and Government Statistical Service.

Based in Central Policy Secretariat (CPS), the International Development Team (IDT) was created in ONS in September 2016 to support statistical modernisation in countries in the developing world. The team prioritises, plans and leads the provision of high-quality technical assistance by ONS to build the capacity of statistical systems in developing countries. Technical assistance is drawn from within IDT, across ONS and the wider GSS where appropriate.

The team based in the UK work with strategic advisors, who are based in our partner organisations in Africa and Jordan. They will also work with country-based staff hired through the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in some countries, as well as a range of technical experts based full or part time with the IDT team, or in business areas across ONS.
