A momentous day in the history of the UK statistical system
1 April 2008 saw the simultaneous launch of the UK Statistics Authority’s website, the Office for National Statistics’ (ONS) new website, and the Publication Hub to mark the dawn of a new era of independence for the UK statistical system.

The launch of these three new websites coincides with:
- full adoption of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007, which will help to establish the UK as a world leader in the provision of official statistics based on high professional standards, openness and trust
- the birth of the UK Statistics Authority as a fully independent body, created by, and accountable to, Parliament with a UK-wide remit to restore public trust in the quality and integrity of official statistics
- the abolition of ONS as a UK government department reporting to ministers, and its transformation into the UK Statistics Authority’s executive office
