The Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 places a statutory requirement on the UK Statistics Authority to promote, monitor and safeguard the production and publication of official statistics that serve the public good. Our casework function plays an important role in building public confidence in the production and use of official statistics and supports our statutory requirements to operate for the public good.

In October 2017, we published our Interventions Policy . This sets out our long-standing practices for interventions, explaining that we will intervene when “official statistics are leaked before publication; the advice of professional statisticians is ignored; or official statistics in a document or statement are presented in such a way that, in the Authority’s opinion, they are liable to mislead the public or undermine the integrity of official statistics”.

This report has been produced to give greater transparency around the casework process. This is part of an overall intention to provide more information and clarity around casework.
