In February 2012, the Chief Executive of the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), requested that the National Statistician conduct an independent statistical review into the collation, analysis and presentation of IPCC official statistics on deaths during or following police contact, and a ten year analytical study of deaths in police custody. This request followed public criticism of the figures produced by the IPCC.

The aim of the National Statistician’s review is to gain a full understanding of the factors that led to public criticism of the statistics and what basis in fact those concerns have. The terms of reference, publications and correspondence can be downloaded from the links on the right.

The report was published on 30 March 2012. A link to the final report and a letter from the National Statistician to the Chief Executive of the IPCC outlining the findings and recommendations can be downloaded from the links on the right.
