Producers of official statistics

All Crown bodies produce official statistics as set out in the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 . Non-crown bodies can be producers if they are listed in secondary legislation.

If the statistics produced are described as official:

  • they can be monitored, scrutinised and assessed by the UK Statistics Authority, who can subsequently comment on them
  • they are expected to comply with the Code of Practice for Statistics (including the rules and principles for pre-release access), and
  • they will be eligible for assessment to become National Statistics.
