All Crown bodies can produce official statistics as set out in the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 . Non-crown bodies can be producers if they are listed in secondary legislation. It is at a producer’s discretion whether a set of statistics is described as official.
If the statistics produced are described as official:
- they can be monitored, scrutinised and assessed by the UK Statistics Authority, who can subsequently comment on them
- they are expected to comply with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics (including the rules and principles for pre-release access), and
- they will be eligible for assessment to become National Statistics.
